Paintings and collages inspired by my dance career, my Haitian/Caribbean
heritage and growing up in Brooklyn. After many years in the dance
world, I return to my first art – bringing to it, many elements
of my performing career. My work is created with torn and cut papers.
Beginning with an acrylic wash, papers are layered and moved until
colors, textures and shapes take on life. Papers are manipulated
like dancers by a choreographer – patterns changing, gracefully
negotiating placement, finding harmony and sometimes creating image
within image. During my dance career, I never abandoned my love of
painting, paid close attention to combinations of movement, dancers,
costumes and lights. Eager to transfer that spirit to paper, the
strength of my work depends on and lies in that very energy … it’s
choreography on canvas!
