Recently with an artist visa, I was among a group of about 30 artists from the United States who visited the 10th Havana Biennial. It was an opportunity to process all the complexities of this nation, whose reputation and reference in the American viewpoint have been marred by decades of political and economic brinkmanship and popular antipathy.

Cuba is a flower in the sun, despite the 47-year US trade embargo and remains a spirited hub where debate, culture, and creativity thrive. I was amazed how easily names like Che and Marti flowed in and out of conversation, particularly at this moment in time which may one day represent a tipping point for the country, as communism slowly cedes to capitalism and the beckoning of US monies and commercialization. This series is an observation of Cubans in Havana, black and white, as they struggle to dream free and live out shared pursuits in the midst of these extreme social contexts.
