The Williamsburg Savings Bank Building is my neighbor. It is
a symbol of an emerging downtown Brooklyn in the Roaring '20's that
never happened. It's
now safely landmarked and generally ignored, but not by me. I see it every
day, several times a day, and watch its moods change as the light, weather and
time of day change. My paintings interpret the building from various vantagepoints
from my roof, down side streets in Brownstone Brooklyn, from across Green-Wood
Cemetery. And now, as the neighborhood seems headed for that downtown conceived
in the 1920's, I watch as the bank reacts to progress. |
