An interest in natural and landscape phenomenon informs my sculptures made from extruded polystyrene and various materials. While maintaining the look of synthetic hybrids, my objects transform this inherently structureless material into quasi-organic forms, reminiscent of otherworldly, cartoon-like mutations to suggest an entropic environment altered by toxicity, yet somehow still evolving. These landforms and “figures” embody in their gestures a response to these conditions, as well as symbolize the sometimes demoralizing, sometimes comic response to human relationships. This seemingly ambivalent fantasy of animated chaos emerges from a sincere contemplation of a sustainable environment—one in which conditions are not ideal, but growth is still possible.
